From Across This Ocean
Can you hear me? From across this ocean, that isolates humans and humans Shut out all the commotion The deafening, yearning, waves of the profound Forming, frothing, spitting, carving us into the ground You are all that I see Gaunt, dust strewn cheeks, Your desolate, piercing eyes, that have embraced all of chaos, never leave me, never cheat Your ribs are a sword, they impale me Leaving only a hole, precise and neat In this deafening tranquillity You are all that I hear Shells, raining overhead A bare dinner table, a thin crust of bread Your scream, anguished and guttural and somehow unearthly real You are all that I feel, Hunger, the hum of an insatiable knife, hollowing you from the inside out Numb pain, from wounds that will heal in ions, no doubt Loss, a part of you, missing, served neatly on a plate Cold, a devouring, slicing figure of fate You are all that I am And in you, I see myself, Stumbling through a dream that leads to no awakening Snatched from the hands of misfortune, I am, yet, that constant beckoning My stomach is always full, but your hunger is mine Open your eyes, do you see me? Reach out, from across this sea These mighty, heedless waves will taunt us no more, oh, let them roar Monsters are on their way, All of humanity, they look to slay The clouds are heavy, its about to rain We will show the heartless, devour this darkness Assemble a fleeting magnitude of childhood creation, a bridge across this void, Pulling rabbits out of hats, we will get to the other side! A deep breath, quivering, hesitantly defiant Grasp my hand, together we will plunge into this lake To discover cold black truth For we are Dreamers, wide Awake -Anandita Abraham

Places of hope
Prophecies for heroics don’t comfort me in the beauty of hope But what comforts me is the normalcy element of hope From a student’s academic grades of expectancy To the words and phrases in poetry But sometimes you could find yourself at the hands of contentment And in the harsh terrains of society, that made me feel small And usually that would tempt me to fall in a pit of disparity But this filled me with hope and gratitude I felt content when there is hope in watching the stars Not when I am among them Sometimes the average or the middle is hope sometimes knowing that is hope sometimes hope is enough and so, I stopped writing this ‘average-leveled’ poem and it was enough. Yes, I am a child
Yes, I am a child Less than eighteen years of age In school no less And so I cannot have rage I live a good life So I do not know anything I do not know struggle I do not know to what shallow lies we cling I do not know of the murder Of the war, of the starvation we face So I must be quiet Otherwise, I’d be out of place I am fortunate enough to have a voice So I should shut up, keep quiet, be grateful I have a choice. But is it because they think I shouldn’t speak? Or is it that no one should, no matter strong or weak. Not if you’re happy, Not if you’re sad Because however you are There’s someone going through worse, so be glad Yes, I am a child Perils of a War
Written By: Adonia Joseph The silence of the living, A void of life, Pulsing with pain and anxiety, Buried under the strife Lucky were the victims, Oblivious to the misery, Resting sweetly in their graves, Death being a victory A planet once alive, Succumbing to blood and rust, A shadow of evil lurking, Crumbling worlds to dust Angels fell from the clouds, Reigning were the demons, Heaven turned inside out, Beast clothed as human Torn were the holy ties, That bound country in unity, Brother against brother, Enraged within a mutiny Fragments of spirit, Hearts in a fleece, Hope for a new tomorrow, An unspoken shot at global peace REMEMBER THIS
By Arren Angel Mercado The silence is deafening As you lie awake in bed, You haven't surrendered yet You made it through the day. So aware of your surrounding Each breath you take is ragged. You pull the sheets way closer And let the darkness swallow you. Whatever you're going through, Keep in mind you're not alone You didn't pull the trigger, Remember it's not your fault. Your mind might play tricks on you But look at the bright side, You're still breathing And you're still alive. Find someone you can talk to Find someone who won't judge. Now let them be your hope Don't ever let them go. Life might throw problems at you But nothing that you can't do. Don't belittle your abilities, Your powers to conquer it through. I am no one to judge you I don't know what you're going through But please just listen Seek for advice and let people in. Remember you are worth it Remember it's not your fault Remember you're important Remember you're not alone. You might be in the dark at the moment But there's hope for everyone. The light is at the end of the tunnel Just hang on by the thread. Please don't give up now, You've made it quite this far. It will get better, I know. Now please keep that in mind. Hope; it drips like saccharine honey with every word
Almost like a soothing melody, like that of a canary bird As people reassure and comfort me one by one That everything will be okay in the long run Hope; my ray of light in the seemingly despondent tunnel of life One full of violence, dissent and strife It is the lullaby that encompasses me like a loving mother And puts me in a state of tranquility like none other Hope; I hold on to every thread of it like a fool Pretending it will protect me from the evils of this ghoul That they pretend is just how life works, but I shall disagree Cause my steadfast hope will lead to what is better for me Hope; I reach out for you in this unilluminated space Longing for your soft, comforting embrace In this dark, I feel desolate without you Is abandoning me like this your way to bid me adieu? OH HOW THE WORLD HAS CHANGED
By Tanvi Singh Oh how the world has changed, From the ancient beliefs of beings, The old-fashioned workings of everyday appliances, To the empowerment of the oppressed, And the futuristic gizmos which rule our lives, Oh how the world has changed. It’s grown so much, it has We’ve been to outer space, Cured many illnesses That plagued the world then, And saved a number of souls. Oh how the world has changed. Smiling through it all, We’ve seamlessly forgotten about all else. Ocean floors coated with plastic, Trees crashing to the ground As if bullet infested soldiers falling to their death. Oh how the world has changed. The polluted air that we so carelessly live in, Choking the ones around us, And hurting the life we call animals. I know we’ve progressed and we’ve changed the world, But I’m not totally sure we’ve done it all for the best. Oh how the world has changed. The Dove
A glistening creature glides high above, In the bright indigo blue sky, It is a dove. Searching for something nearby. It flies over a dark stormy land, Full of war and fights and sadness and hatred. With no love or friendship or something sacred. A shivering, hungry, lonely boy lies on the freezing pavement, waiting for it to end, The affluent man that passes by him has nothing to lend, Not a dollar or a penny or anything else he would spend. The dove gazes at him unable to comprehend. It would rather fly somewhere filled with emptiness and nothing but sand. It later arrives at a bright, flowering, pulchritudinous land, Full of peace and friendship and love and joy, A father delightedly plays with his boy. Other’s lend gifts and books and many types of toys. The dove smiles as this is a sight that it definitely enjoys. SHE IS THE ONE
She a force to be reckoned with, She is neither reality, nor myth. She is a candle in the gloom, She is the shadow in the room, She is the voice that urges you to try, She is the spine that supports your dream, She can be the whisper that opens your eyes, Or she can be louder; she can be the scream. She is the push at the edge of a ridge, She is your path; she is your bridge, She is the wave that roars within you, She is the strength that pulls you through She sings in phases of silence, She floats in murky water, She is the body that orders the balance, For you could not live a day without her. In the toughest battles, you scramble for her, You pull every string and check every corner, And when things seem bleak, like you’ve lost her forever, She will surprise you, she’ll pull you together She dances in the day, And pulses through the night, Conquering the dismay, And conjuring the fight She is the umbrella, for the harshest of rains, She is the comfort through the nastiest of pains, She has no limit, no boundaries, no ultimate, She is the one they call hope Hope
hope- it rises, like a phoenix from the ashes sparks catch and spread, consuming all that is living, until its cleansed and made anew by the destruction of the raging fire. hope- washes away fear, like the tide of the waves gentle but constant, forever wiping away the slate until all that is left, is new beginning. hope, a buoy, a lifejacket, in life’s dangerous waters a miracle of heaven, stopping mankind from drowning and slipping, pulled in by fear’s deadly tendrils hope, a soft blanket, mother natures had on a shoulder, a comforting voice “you will get through this” hope, an activist for human rights, a revolutionary changing the world, light in the darkness, will save us all. |
